History of the Root Family Museum
The Root Family Museum, established in late 2001, houses one of the most unique and diverse Americana collections in Florida. Among its most notable features is one of the world’s largest collections of Coca-Cola memorabilia, showcasing the Root family’s deep connection to the iconic brand that helped build their family legacy. Through an array of bottles, vending machines, advertisements, and artifacts, visitors can trace the evolution of Coca-Cola’s design and marketing, as well as the story of the Root Family Glass Works and its growth into one of the largest independent Coca-Cola bottlers in the nation.
Beyond Coca-Cola, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into mid-century travel and industry through two full-sized train cars — the “Silver Holly,” a converted family coach, and the 1948 “Hiawatha,” a restored Skytop Lounge car once known for its high-speed service between Chicago and Minneapolis. These preserved pieces provide a rare window into the luxury and innovation of American rail travel.
The museum also boasts Florida’s largest teddy bear collection, featuring more than 800 bears in a variety of whimsical costumes and styles, as well as displays of early pharmacy equipment, vintage race cars, and handcrafted quilts. Together, these eclectic exhibits reflect the Root family’s passion for preserving the spirit of American history, industry, and culture.
